5 Unexpected Symptoms – Hernia

The most prudent choice when it comes to hernia is attending to the most significant symptom so that the required action may be taken. While it is for the doctor or physician to diagnose the problem, a noticeable bulge in your body might quite commonly mean a hernia. It is easy to miss a hernia as the symptoms show up later, which is why it is advisable to see a doctor at the earliest. Hernia might happen due to lifting heavy weights. With hernia, there are symptoms that are not commonly known, which are as follows:

Bowel obstruction/constipation

Hernias can affect the ability to defecate and even urinate in some cases, if the intestines are a part of a hernia. Constipation may be mild or strong depending on a hernia. Hernias, if not treated on time, can even prove to be fatal, which is why it is advisable to see the best hernia surgeon in Delhi or any other metro city if you witness symptoms. A hernia, in this case, occurs when the intestines breaks through the abdominal wall.

Acid reflux and chest pain

Acid reflux means stomach acids flowing backwards into the food pipe. This is often caused due to hiatal hernia, which might even lead the patient to develop gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). While this disease is easily treatable, it causes significant discomfort. GERD poses certain complications that include cancer, sleep apnea, pneumonia, and hoarseness. Medicines are usually prescribed to treat GERD.

Respiratory Problems

For obvious reasons, respiratory complications and not commonly associated with hernia, but it is common. Hiatal hernias are known to cause chronic respiratory problems, most commonly coughing. This is caused due to food and acid reflux into the throat, which lead to coughing, hoarseness and even pneumonia. It is common to witness this symptom at night while sleeping. Reflux is common among sleep apnea patients, which must be treated at the earliest.

Incarceration

Incarceration relates to the possibility of tissue entrapment. When sections of the intestines or organs get trapped due to the protrusion, it is known as Incarceration. Treatments are relatively simple if the hernia remains mobile. Treatments get complicated as the size of the hernia increases, which is usually painful and maybe even life-threatening if it progresses to the next stage.

Strangulation

This is the worst symptom; it happens when blood flow to the incarcerated tissue is compromised. This might lead to tissue damage, and consequently gangrene or necrosis. Infection usually follows these complications. ‘Strangulation’ is the only symptom that warrants emergency care. It is one of the reasons why surgery is suggested to hernia patients.
