On Thursday last week, Asif Ali Zardari the former Pakistani president left for Afghanistan in order to discuss the Pak-Afghan bilateral relations with Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive Officer as well as President Ashraf Ghani and other leaders in the country not forgetting the former president Hamid Karzai. He was invited by the Afghani president last year when he had visited the country and he is among some top politicians from Pakistan who have visited the country. They were also to talk on how to boost the people-to-people contacts as well as how to ensure that the anti-terror cooperation between the two was strengthened. Ali Zardari was accompanied by Yousuf Raza Gilani the former Prime Minister and Sherry Rehman the Vice President of Pakistan Peoples Party. During his visit, Zardari together with his delegation received a warm welcome from diplomats, Abrar Hussain who is the Pakistani ambassador in Kabul among other senior Afghan government officials. Terrorism is a serious threat for the two countries and that is one reason that Ali Zardari who is also the Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman called for effective cooperation in the region.
During his one day visit, those that have been following the cnn free stream saw the headlines of Ali Zardari and his delegation being hosted at the Dilkusha Palace after a day full of meetings. They had been invited for dinner by the president. The discussion in regards to the bilateral relations of the two countries continued during the visit to the palace. A statement by Abdullah indicated that there was a need for a new cooperation in order to face the serious threats in the region, the two also needed to enhance the economic situation in the region and also other matters that were of benefit. Speaking at the event, the former Pakistani president encouraged the support that his country would offer in the region. Qazi Khalilullah who is the spokesman of the Foreign Office added that since Afghanistan and Pakistan enjoy bilateral ties, they were encouraging political contacts between the two and also said that the visit by the Pakistan officials was a good sign of a peaceful region.
During his tenure as the president of Pakistan, he played a great role in cementing a peaceful relation with Kabul and he continues to do so. The visit by Ali Zardari is not the first one that important figures in Pakistan had had to Afghanistan as early this year, several others had made their way to Kabul and some are yet to make their way there after invitations by the Afghan leadership under the supervision of America.
