Cochin: Kerala’s Commercial Capital  

Cochin is also called as Kochi and it is a major port city lying in the state of Kerala. It lies on the south West coast of India and lies by the Laccadive sea. It is officially a part of the district of Ernakulam and is often called as Ernakulam in reference to the mainland part of the city. As a matter of fact, the city is the second largest corporation and is the most populous city of the state. It is an extended metropolitan region and is known to be the largest urban agglomeration in the state of Kerala. Cochin Municipal Corporation governs the main civic body of the city. it was constituted in the year 1967 and it is further governed by the Greater Cochin Development Authority as well as the GoShree Islands Development Authority.

The city has derived its name from the word Kochu Azhi, which refers to a small lagoon. There is yet another theory that claims that Cochi derived its name from the word Kaci that means harbour. Fra Paoline and Nicolo Conti are Italian explorers from the 17th century that claimed that the city was called as Kochchi, and it was named after the rivers connecting the backwaters to the sea. After the arrival of the Portuguese and then that of the British, its name was stuck as an official appellation.
