Perhaps your lab is considering offering biobanking services, or beginning new cryogenic research. If so, you will need cryovials for the best results. Cryovials, or cryogenic vials, are for use when storing biological material at low temperatures, especially in cryogenics, or the study of the production and behavior of materials at temperatures below -150⁰C. These vials can handle temperatures to as far down as -196⁰C. Cryovials should only be used during the gas phase of liquid nitrogen.
Standards of Quality
The manufacturing of cryovials is regulated by a number of agencies and certifying bodies. These regulations vary based on the intended use of the vials and the materials used in manufacturing. For example, vial caps may need to be meet Department of Transportation and the International Air Transport Association regulations, while plastic vials should have RNAse/Dnase and endotoxin-free certifications in order to be certain of product integrity.
Cryogenic vials should also be manufactured from raw materials, whether glass or plastic. This prevents contamination in your samples from any trace that on left on recycled materials. If made from a plastic polymer, the material should be non-cytotoxic and non-mutagenic, for the same reason.
Be Able to Easily Identify Your Samples
Cryovials should be labeled in order to preserve the integrity of the samples. You can apply barcodes or printing to cryovials, or write information in by hand to the label included on each vial. This is in order to keep track of the cells, blood, saliva, serum, or other biological fluids stored in each vial.
You can purchase cryovials from Wheaton in a range of sizes and styles, depending on the best fit for your uses. We carry both glass and plastic cryovials with capacities from 1.2mL to 5mL, and you can choose from free-standing or round bottom designs with either external or internal threads. Most of our vials sold come in clear, but we do have a white style. Vials can be sold with graduations to allow easy identification of volume levels.
We also offer all supplies you will need in addition to your cryovials, including storage boxes, tube racks, and caps, as well as equipment for applying barcodes to samples and reading them. Caps are available in different colors, which can then be matched to colored trays, for any situation where it is beneficial to color code your samples.
Whether you only need a small number or are interested in purchasing in bulk, we have a package size for you, or can create a custom order. This applies to both the cryovials and all supplies you may need additionally.
