Tobacco is made from dried tobacco leaves and various added chemicals. The tobacco in cigarettes contain more than 7000 chemicals, of which at least 250 are known to be very harmful, including ammonia, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, etc. Of these 250 harmful chemicals, 69 of them at least, can cause cancer including arsenic, nickel, beryllium, cadmium, ethylene oxide, etc.

Moreover, tobacco leaves also contain radioactive materials such as Polonium-210, the level of which depends on the soil in which they’re being grown and the fertilizers being used. Smoking tobacco harms almost all the organs of a human body, thus diminishing their overall life and health.

1. Cancer – Smoking tobacco is one of the leading causes of cancer, world over. Cancers caused by tobacco smoking include cervix, stomach, pancreas, bladder, kidney, throat, mouth, larynx, esophagus and even myeloid leukemia.

2. Heart & lung diseases – A number of heart diseases can also be caused due to tobacco smoking. Heart and lung ailments associated with consumption of cigarettes include strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), aneurysm, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma.

3. Reproductive health – The reproductive problems associated with tobacco smoking include babies with abnormalities or low weight or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) for women. Men, indulging in excessive tobacco smoking can be faced with erectile dysfunction.

4. Mental health – Tobacco smoking can damage brain blood vessels thus causing harmful effects on the mental health of an individual. Depression is one of the common problems associated with excessive smoking. Other problems related to mental health include suicide tendencies, agoraphobia, anxiety and panic disorders.

5. Premature deaths – There are large number of premature deaths caused due to tobacco smoking worldwide. Of the number, 40% are caused due to cancer, 35% due to stroke and heart disease and 25% due to various lung diseases.
