A much needed breakthrough for Microsoft came with the launch of HoloLens, unveiled at an event held in Redmond, Washington on Wednesday, is a sleek andvery well-designed image projection headset. The HoloLens has been referred to as a futuristic headset with the transparent lenses. In fact, it has made the headlines in most of the tech news websites. Unlike Facebook’Oculus Rift wherein you are almost blind and can’t look around to walk, with this Microsoft gadget you can easily walk around and see where you are. The best part is the 3D transformation where the user can see objects floating around him / her with virtually augmented walls in your living room. It is an attempt from Microsoft in the augmented reality technology.
Technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Microsoftare moving towards revolutionizing our world by bringing us the future now. Commonly you would see in a movie as that of “Minority Report” where Tom Cruise used mere hand gestures to his police work. After 5 years, Apple came with a touchscreen which can be operated with hand and finger gestures.
HoloLens: The Science Behind It
HoloLensproduces 3D images which can only be seen by the one who is wearing it. This device has been proposed to be designed for personal and office use. The one who wears this still has the visibility to be aware of real objects around without banging into one.
HoloLens has the capability to track what you are staring at and transform the objects in front of you into 3D. You can also use hand gestures interact with them. This device comes loaded with sophisticated hardware such as sensors to track your movements and gives you freedom to interact with objects from different angles. A camera is also installed into the device to locate the objects such as table, chair, etc. in the room.
This device is also very exciting for Skype users. Through the video chatting option, the other person on the call can give directions via diagrams and arrows. This opens up new avenue for business opportunities in fields such as medical, manufacturing, etc. in ways we interact with the real world.
How is it different from Facebook’s Oculus Rift
Many of us would argue that HoloLens looks similar to Rift from a distance. Infact, it is very much different in its functionality and features. As Rift would plunge you into a completely virtual world, but HoloLens keeps you engaged with the real world itself.
This might sound like a device in a movie, but it is not!
