In 2002 a project called APOLLO was launched in order to develop a tire for intelligent vehicle technology.
As stated, the three main research objectives, according to project documentation and presentation that was presented, were:
– Introducing innovative sensors for monitoring tire condition, road condition and tire-road interaction.
– Developing novel solutions for a wireless communication interface and a battery-less power supply enabling intelligent tire systems.
– Creating an ‘intelligent’ tire: integrating all electronic components into the tire by means of mechanization design, taking into account processes of manufacturing, handling and maintenance. The three main objectives in producing intelligent tyre prototype, according to the same source, were:
– To increase road traffic safety by means of an intelligent tire system;
– To enable improvements for vehicle control systems, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and chassis control systems;
– To enable the introduction of innovative services concerning tire and road conditions for different user groups both inside and outside the vehicle.

The concept of Intelligent tire means lots of sensors mounted on single tire which can give us lots of data connected directly to tire-ground connection. Tyre data important as primary input parameters for Advanced Driver Assistance System are: pressure, temperature, tread wear, damage, stress, tire type, age and other logistic parameters. This data combined with road data (texture of road surface, road type and road condition) and data acquired from others vehicle sensors (forces, torques, friction, speed, slip, detection of aquaplaning) can only improve safety and driving assistance that a particular car is giving to a driver.
All the aspects of intelligent tyre concept were discussed at 10th Annual Conference Intelligent Tires Technology 2014 that took place in the city of Nurtingen in Germany, 21-23 October 2014.
The Conference was a rather interesting experience where all the present had the benefit of learning about the latest world-wide regulations on tires and discover advanced technologies for intelligent tire systems. Further, exploring of innovative solutions for improving acoustics was one of the main topics. These any many other interesting points were discussed and enjoyed by car experts and lovers.
Intelligent tire prototype will help produce better tires for commercial vehicles. When we say better, we mean tires that are fuel efficient, that have ability to bear up heavy load and have prolonged durability.
